National Institute for Nuclear Physics | Ferrara Division

Nu_AT_FNAL constitutes the Italian component of the DUNE experiment (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment), whose activity is part of a large multi-decade program aimed at studying the physics of neutrinos (oscillations and mass hierarchy) and the still unknown parameters of the Standard Model. Two experimental sites will be built: at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) for the production of the neutrino beam and the near detector; at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) mine in South Dakota for the far detector. The far detector will consist of 4 temporal projection chambers (TPC) in liquid argon (LAr), equipped with latest generation cryogenic SiPM sensors. The research activity of the Ferrara group involves the realization of the experimental setups and read-out electronics to perform measurements, both at room temperature and at cryogenic temperature; and the characterization and selection of the SiPM devices that will be used both in a prototype called protoDUNE and in the far detector.
