The AC Lateral Shields

The AC lateral shields are CsI(Na) scintillators 10 mm thick, 275 mm high and 402 mm wide. The sum of their signals is sent to the threshold for the AC logic, generating the veto signal when the signal exceeds the threshold (for a more detailed description of these units, see the GRBM section). This way, all the events that leave part of their energy into the shields, are vetoed by the electronics, reducing the PDS background noise.
